Building a House of Mercy

AN INVITATION TO CELEBRATE A JOB WELL DONE

                 Sunday, August 13th 2017  at 12:00 noon

In the Spring of 2016, the Pastors of the Pierce County Deanery entered into a partnership with Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity to fund, build, and dedicate a house to Pope Francis in honor of his Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The Pope Francis Jubilee House is located in Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity's community called, 'The Woods' (lot #218). The street address is 1006 104th St E, Tacoma WA 98445.

Our "Wall Raising" (a great celebration, kind of like a ground breaking ceremony) took place on Saturday, June 11.  Father Wichert, the Dean of Pierce Deanery at the time, offered the blessing.  Parishioners who were present were  provided permanent markers with which to write prayers, messages, well wishes, etc. on the house's framing materials before helping to stand the walls up and nail them into place. see video

This commitment by the pastors of our parishes provided every Catholic in the county with an opportunity to participate as their abilities and time permited. The house was completed in the Fall of 2016 and stood ready to welcome a deserving family.

In the Summer of 2017 a family was approved and they are moving into the Pope Francis Jubilee Habitat House.  They are Kennedy Bwanika and Mary Namukwaya.  They have seven children.  Three are still at home (two daughters, ages 12 and 8; and one son age 4).  They are parishioners at St Leo's and will fully appreciate the significance of the house's dedication to Pope Francis' Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy and all of the parishes efforts to fund and build it.

A celebration will be hosted by the Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity Affiliate on Sunday, August 13th at noon.   Cake, coffee and juice will be provided by Habitat.  Everyone in all the Pierce County parishes are invited.  If a parish plans to present a memento or gift to the family, or if you plan to bring additional food for the event, please coordinate with Dan Fannin @ 253.229.7877.
