Celebrating the Anointing of the Sick

“Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church,
and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord”
James 5:14

What is the Sacrament of Anointing?

The Sacrament was instituted by Jesus and celebrated by the Church in order to offer the healing grace of God to the sick, the aged and infirm, to forgive sins, to make known the prayerful concern of the people of God for anyone who is suffering from illness, and to offer compassionate assistance to those in need because of sickness or infirmity.

Who Can be Anointed?

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is intended for Catholics whose health is seriously impaired (including serious mental illness), those who are suffering the infirmities of advancing  age, or those preparing for surgery.

Persons experiencing the infirmities associated with aging, or individuals suffering a prolonged illness, may be anointed more frequently, especially when a sick person again falls into serious illness after convalescence or whenever a more serious crisis develops during the same illness.

What to Do?

A sick person or family member should contact the Parish Office if someone needs to be anointed. Please request the Anointing of the Sick as soon as illness arises, so that they may participate as fully as possible.

Please do not delay the sacrament to the moment of death.  Sacraments are for the living -- people who have died cannot be anointed.

If a Catholic in the parish is seriously ill, hospitalized, or homebound because of health circumstances, please call the parish office to arrange for a priest to administer the Sacrament of Anointing: 253-875-6630.

Emergency:  In the event of a emergency, please call the parish main number 253-875-6630.  If after hours, or if the automated recording answers, press 33.  Leave a message according to the instructions, and your call will be returned as soon as possible.
